Professor Gamal Shiha is Professor of Internal Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine, Mansoura University, Egypt, and former Head of the Gastroenterology and Hepatology Unit at the Faculty of Medicine, Mansoura University. He is a leading hepatologist who has played an important role in transforming hepatitis C care in Egypt from individual patient management towards a public-health approach based on community screening, outreach, access to free treatment and research.
He founded the Association of Liver Patients’ Care in 1997 and later the Egyptian Liver Research Institute and Hospital in 2011, and pioneered the “Educate, Test and Treat” model through the Village Free from Hepatitis initiative. His contribution to hepatitis C elimination was highlighted by the World Health Organization in a 2024 profile entitled “Gamal Shiha: eliminating hepatitis C. He is also Member of executive committee of Asian Pacific Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (APASL),(2006-2010).
