Prof. Masao Omata

Prof. Masao Omata is President of Yamanashi Central & Kita Hospitals and Honorary Professor at the University of Tokyo, where he served as Professor and Chairman from 1992. Over 55 years in hepatology since 1970, his landmark work has spanned early research on occult HBV and hepatitis B-related liver cancer, pioneering molecular studies on cccDNA and the pre-core mutant, and the development of clinical guidelines for HCC prevention and treatment.

A prolific researcher with around 1,300 publications and an H-index of 168, Prof. Omata was a founding board member of the Asian Pacific Digestive Week Federation (APDWF) and helped establish the APASL Annual Meeting and official journal, later serving as APASL President and founding Editor-in-Chief of Hepatology International. In 2025, he received the Emperor Showa Memorial Academic Award and the APDWF Meritorious Award for his contributions to Asian gastroenterology and hepatology.
