A/Prof David Hewett is a gastroenterologist at Colonoscopy Clinic and Associate Professor at The University of Queensland. After graduating with honours from UQ, he undertook clinical and research training at the RBWH, before completing a post-doctoral fellowship in advanced colonoscopy with Professor Douglas Rex at Indiana University.
A/Prof Hewett seeks to lead global colonoscopy practice and make it accessible by increasing engagement in colonoscopy training across the Asia-Pacific region. His clinical interests include colorectal cancer screening and the technical performance of colonoscopy, including detection, advanced imaging and resection, and endoscopic training. He has published widely on new colonoscopic techniques, technologies and methods of training.
A/Prof Hewett is active internationally in colorectal cancer policy and training initiatives. He is a member of advisory boards for the Australian Government Bowel Cancer Screening Program and the Asian Novel Bio-Imaging and Intervention Group and is a member of the editorial board for the Journal of the Anus, Rectum and Colon and the international advisory board for Digestive Endoscopy.
He was recently re-elected to the board of the Gastroenterological Society of Australia, having served as GESA director of training (2013-2014) and specialist training committee member for the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (2010-2015).
