Senior Research Dietitian

Australia

Dr. Emma Halmos is a senior research dietitian at Monash University, internationally recognized for her work on dietary management of gastrointestinal disease, particularly irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). She led the pivotal feeding study demonstrating the efficacy of the low FODMAP diet in IBS — a study that transformed global attitudes toward dietary management of functional gut symptoms, featured on the cover of the field's leading journal, and has been cited over 1,400 times, earning the Rome Foundation's award for most cited paper in functional gastrointestinal disorders. The low FODMAP diet is now a cornerstone of authoritative IBS management guidelines worldwide, all of which cite her work.

Dr. Halmos has also made a significant impact in IBD, as an invited author of two reviews on dietary management of IBD in Nature Reviews Gastroenterology and Hepatology. She sits on the D-ECCO (Dietitians of European Crohn's and Colitis Organisation) committee and is a leading coordinator of the first ECCO guidelines on nutrition in IBD. At Monash University, she leads research into novel dietary therapies for IBD and IBS, and co-leads the Monash GIN (Gastroenterology, Immunology and Neuroscience) Discovery Programme, representing gastroenterology.

An active clinician and mentor, Dr. Halmos maintains a private practice specializing in gastrointestinal disease and currently supervises five PhD students, along with honours and masters researchers, with a particular commitment to inspiring dietitians to pursue careers in gastrointestinal research.
