Professor Ari Fahrial Syam is a Professor of Internal Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Indonesia, and a consultant gastroenterologist with expertise in gastroenterology, hepatology, digestive endoscopy, and Helicobacter pylori research. He currently serves as President of the Indonesian Society of Gastroenterology (ISG) (2023 – Present) and previously served as Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Indonesia (2017–2025), where he led major advancements in medical education, research, and the Academic Health System.
An internationally recognized clinician-scientist, Prof. Syam has also held numerous leadership positions in national and regional medical organizations. He has authored more than 150 Scopus-indexed publications (H-index 26) and contributed extensively to national clinical guidelines and medical textbooks. His research focuses on Helicobacter pylori infection, functional gastrointestinal disorders, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), gastrointestinal endoscopy, and digestive oncology. Through his academic leadership and scientific contributions, he has played a pivotal role in advancing digestive health research, education, and clinical practice in Indonesia and across the Asia-Pacific region.
