Prof. Jia-Horng Kao is a Lifetime National Chair Professor (Ministry of Education, Taiwan) and NTU Chair Professor at National Taiwan University, where he also serves as Vice Superintendent of National Taiwan University Hospital (NTUH). He earned his MD and PhD from National Taiwan University College of Medicine and has been an attending physician in the Division of Gastroenterology at NTUH since 1992. He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD).

An internationally recognized authority on viral hepatitis and hepatocellular carcinoma, Prof. Kao is best known for his pioneering work characterizing hepatitis B virus genotypes and their clinical significance. He was ranked among the top 2% of scientists globally by career citation impact (2021) and identified as a top 0.0059% world expert in hepatitis by ExpertScape (2023). His contributions have been recognized with numerous honors, including the APASL Okuda-Omata Distinguished Achievement Award (2019) and AASLD Fellowship (2015).

Prof. Kao currently serves as President of the Gastroenterological Society of Taiwan (GEST) and President of ACT-LD and sits on the Steering Council of the Asian Pacific Association for the Study of the Liver (APASL). He previously served as President of the Taiwan Association for the Study of the Liver (2017–2019), Chief of the Division of Hepatology/Gastroenterology at NTUH (2017–2020), and Director of the Hepatitis Research Center at NTUH (2003–2009). He is Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of the Formosan Medical Association and serves on the editorial boards of leading international journals including Gastroenterology, GUT, and the Journal of Hepatology.
