Professor Rupert Leong is Professor of Medicine at both the University of Sydney and Macquarie University and Director of Inflammatory Bowel Disease Services at Concord Hospital in Sydney. He is internationally recognised for his expertise in IBD, therapeutic endoscopy, real-world cohort research, and clinical trials. He serves on the Global Task Force of the European Crohn's and Colitis Organisation (ECCO), is a member of the International Organization for the Study of Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IOIBD), a Trustee of the JGH Foundation, an Executive member of the IBD Faculty of the Gastroenterological Society of Australia, and an Associate Editor of Therapeutic Advances in Gastroenterology. He has led national and international consensus statements and multicentre studies, with research focused on optimising IBD treatment strategies, precision medicine, and improving patient outcomes through translational and real-world research.


Professor Leong has delivered several prestigious named lectures, including the Nimmo Lecture at the Royal Adelaide Hospital, the Trans-Tasman Lecture of the New Zealand Society of Gastroenterology, and the Twilight Lecture of the South African Gastroenterology Society. His awards include the NHMRC Career Development Fellowship, the RACP Career Development Award, the GESA Career Development Award, the AstraZeneca Emerging Leader Award, the GESA Abbott IBD Research Award, and the UNSW Paper of the Year Award.
