Prof. Shinji Tanaka is a leading figure in Japanese gastrointestinal endoscopy, specializing in the diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy of colorectal neoplasia, alongside endoscopic and clinicopathological research in the field. A graduate of Hiroshima University School of Medicine (1984), he served as Professor in the Department of Endoscopy at Hiroshima University Hospital and the Graduate School of Biomedical and Health Sciences from 2007, before being named Professor Emeritus of Hiroshima University in 2023.
In 2022, he served as President of the Japan Gastroenterological Endoscopy Society (JGES), and in 2026 was named its Honorary President. Since 2023, he has also served as President of JA Onomichi General Hospital and currently serves as Clinical Adviser to Amano Hospital (Medical Corporation Heartful). He is a Fellow of the Japan Gastroenterological Endoscopy Society (FJGES) and the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (FASGE).
