Prof. Yasushi Sano

Prof. Yasushi Sano, MD, PhD, FJGES, is Clinical Professor at Kansai Medical University, Osaka, and Director of the Gastrointestinal Center at Sano Hospital, Kobe, Japan. He is internationally recognized as a leading authority in the diagnosis of colorectal neoplasia, image-enhanced endoscopy, and therapeutic endoscopy. He pioneered the clinical application of narrow-band imaging (NBI), magnifying endoscopy, and close optical endoscopy (COE), proposed the Sano Classification, made major contributions to the development and worldwide dissemination of the JNET Classification, and contributed to advances in therapeutic endoscopy, particularly EMR, ESD, and EID for the treatment of colorectal neoplasia.

As principal investigator of the landmark Japan Polyp Study, he established key evidence supporting post-polypectomy surveillance. He has authored more than 200 peer-reviewed publications, edited Atlas of Advanced Endoscopy (Springer Nature, 2024), and contributed to leading international textbooks. He has delivered numerous invited lectures and live endoscopy demonstrations across Asia, Europe, North and South America, and the Middle East. He has held prominent leadership positions in international endoscopy societies, including Chair and current Secretary of ANBIIG, and continues to contribute to advances in the diagnosis and management of colorectal neoplasia through research, education, and international collaboration.
